The Nigerian football fraternity was hit with another tragedy as
former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Austin Ejide, on Thursday confirmed the
death of his mother, Mrs Mary Onuekwusia Ejide, (Aruka Akwa).
Speaking with Complete Sports on the development, Ejide, who didn’t say exactly when his mother passed away, said his family was already making arrangements to fly her corpse back to their country home in Agulu, Anambra State, for burial.
“She had been in the USA for a while. She died in Chicago, to be precise,” said the former Rangers and Gabros International FC goalkeeper said.
“We’re still planning for the burial. When we are through, as regards when the corpse will be flown home, I will let you know.”
Ejide earned 45 caps for the Super Eagles in a career that pitted him against former no 1 Vincent Enyeama for long spells.
He featured for Etoile Du Sahel of Tunisia following his move from defunct Nigerian League side Gabros International FC Nnewi, helping the Tunisians win the last edition of the CAF African Cup Winners trophy in 2003.
The giant goalkeeper also starred for SC Bastia of France, and Israeli sides Hapoel Petah Tikva and Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
